BACKSTAGE @ KATE SPADE NEW YORK FW16: HAIR & MAKEUP

Hair inspiration: Recine for BEAUTY.COM using PHYTO and BEACHWAVER

“When you do a ponytail, it’s nothing to do with really, really well or done by a hairdresser. The whole theory is that we’re trying to instill confidence. We love all the little mistakes and the way to bring sophistication to that is to make a very, very straight part. The straighter the part, the more shaggy we can be. That brings a sophistication to something to very, very simple.”IMGP2879-e1455322082189

How to: “We’re putting a little bit of the PHYTO mousse on the root here just so that we can make that zip part. We’re spraying the hair all with a little bit of hairspray and doing what I call a convertible blow dry, which is just air, just kind of like you’re in a convertible. Whatever happens, happens. We’re not brushing hair. After, we just gently just shape and we look and we mold the face. Not to be so granny, we want to see a little, tiny bit of the ears and just basically finish it off with a little bit of hairspray and a nice little bow because it is a little dressed but we don’t want the hair dressed. There’s nothing perfect about beauty.”

His favorite styling tool:  “Everybody’s saying, ‘What’s your favorite styling tool?” Confidence, that’s what we want. What works great for you is great for you. You don’t have to listen to short hair is the season or long hair is … That’s passé. Those kinds of questions and things are finished. What empowers a person, what is a person’s confidence, that’s what real beauty is. That’s what really modernity is. It’s something that is, “Hey, this is me. This works for me. I like long hair. I like short hair.” That works. That’s the same kind of theory when we do a very simple ponytail, as you can see. You’re going to hear some people say, “Oh, it’s a little bit messy.” Everybody’s a little bit messy at times. You’re already all put together and you don’t need your hair put together. Then you start to look like a little wedding cake. You know what I mean, you have to have a little flaw in beauty. That’s where charm is.”

Makeup Look: Romy Soleimani for BEAUTY.COM using KEVYN AUCOIN and WEI

Face prep: “Wei skincare, we used is called Radiance Milk and this Pudding Cream which is almost like cushion on the skin which is really beautiful; followed by this new foundation by Kevyn Aucoin called Luminous Foundation. We’re mixing it in the center of the face and kind of moving it out. It has a beautiful finish… almost in between a serum and a tinted moisturizer plus a little foundation because it covers.”

Cheeks and Eyes: “We’re using a little bit of a cream blush – Patrice in blood rose from. Kevyn Aucoin. We’re curling the lashes, curling mascara, top and bottom. We don’t want them to look dolly. We just want them to look kind of like bright eyed and open. I use new eye cream from Wei on the eyelid just to kind of give it not a glossy effect but more of a dewy, moisturized eyelid effect; a little extra hydration and kind of dewiness on the eyelid.”

Lips: “The lips, it’s this pencil called Hyacinth from Kevyn Aucoin and these one my favorite kind of natural, pinky lip pencils. I’m wearing it right now like as a lot but you kind of just use it to define if you’re wearing like no lipstick, you can use this to define your natural lips and blend it in with your lip balm. It’s my go-to on any shoot where I’m doing a no makeup and it look like it’s like no makeup but how did you do that? She has baby lips but she was born with perfectly defined baby lips. No, that’s Hyacinth lip liner mixed with lip balm and that’s it. It’s just really this kind of freshness, Anna Karenina, girl.”
